Internet / Media Law

The effects of defamation

Years of hard work and perseverance building a strong company and/or individual brand and reputation can be destroyed in moments by someone sitting at a computer, or on their mobile phone. Platforms such as the internet, social media, email and communication apps such as Whats App, are frequently where unlawful and damaging actions are perpetrated.

There is a wrongly held and serious misconception that actions online are protected by an anonymous veil or made-up name, and that it is possible to post comments and/or content on the internet, blogs and social media platforms, that negatively and unfairly damage the reputation of a business or brand, without being held accountable.

Whilst this area of law continues to evolve, what has already been proven in case law is that defamatory behaviour, such as slander or libel, is unlawful and there are ways to identify the culprits and bring them to justice. Whether it be an individual, a business, a journalist, bloggers, joe public, ’A AN OTHER’, there are ways to hold them accountable for unlawful actions.

What is clear is that you must act quickly if you are affected by defamation or a reputation attack in any form. In today’s age of instant communication, opinions, information and statements, irrespective of accuracy, travel fast. A publication can be global within moments.

If you are facing issues of defamation in any form (slander, libel, malicious falsehood) the best thing you can do to protect yourself is to act swiftly.

The team at Pinder Reaux, led by John Spyrou, has extensive experience in successfully preventing, mitigating and seeking compensation for damage caused by defamatory behaviour.

Pinder Reaux can advise you of the options you have and what swift action to take to prevent the defamation from occurring, or to minimise the impact of defamation that has already occurred.
